Grid Electrification and the New Shape of Power Demand

Data centers get the headlines, but the more durable power demand story is quieter, more distributed, and less understood.

Overview

Beyond the data center headline

Data center load growth is real, but it is also the most-discussed and best-modeled part of the demand story. Industrial electrification and vehicle charging load are growing from a smaller base but with less cyclicality, and current utility integrated resource plans are inconsistent in how they capture this.

The grid is the constraint, not generation

Interconnection queues, not generation capacity, are the practical bottleneck across most of the regions we cover. Transmission-focused capital deployment appears underappreciated relative to the attention generation technology choices receive.
